Stuck in Fight, Flight, or Freeze?

Stuck in Fight, Flight, or Freeze?

Have you ever felt like your reactions don’t match the situation?

Like you know you’re okay… but your body is acting like you’re not?

That’s your nervous system doing its job.

We often talk about stress like it’s just in the mind—but your body has its own system for survival. And it’s always scanning for safety.

This is where something called Polyvagal Theory comes in, developed by Stephen Porges.

In simple terms, your nervous system has three main states:

  • Fight or Flight — anxiety, restlessness, overthinking, urgency
  • Freeze — shutdown, numbness, disconnection
  • Regulation (Safety) — calm, present, connected

The problem is, your body doesn’t respond to logic. It responds to perception.

So even if you’re objectively safe, your system might still be running an old pattern.

I worked with someone who would completely shut down during conflict. She wasn’t choosing it—it just happened. Her body would go quiet, her thoughts would disappear, and afterward she’d feel frustrated with herself.

But when we explored it, her system had learned long ago that silence was safer than expression.

That’s not weakness. That’s adaptation.

Even in ancient survival stories, this pattern shows up. Think of animals in the wild—when they can’t fight or flee, they freeze. It’s intelligent. It’s protective.

But what protected you once can limit you now.

The goal isn’t to “fix” your nervous system.
It’s to help it update.

Practices like breathwork, grounding, and somatic awareness don’t just relax you—they send signals of safety to your body.

And over time, your baseline begins to shift.

You respond instead of react.
You stay present instead of shutting down.

Not because you forced it.
But because your system finally feels safe enough to choose differently.
